Calhoun’s commitment to those factors and his efforts to broaden them to the fullest would assign him a completely unique function in American records as the ethical, political, and religious voice of Southern separatism. Born in 1782 in upcountry South Carolina, Calhoun grew up at some stage in the boom in the location’s cotton economic system.
